THE MINGEI THEORY BY SOETSU YANAGI

Stavropolsky Yuliy Vladimirovich

Abstract
S. Yanagi and his mingei theory are well-known in the West primarily due to its so called Orientalist philosophical slant adding some new dimension to the Western interest in the issues of the folk craftsmanship. However far from being authentically Orientalist the mingei theory is a hybrid of the eclectic concepts ladled out of diverse British, Scandinavian and German philosophies of the folk art of the late XIX – early ХХ centuries.
