Abstract
The article presents a historical overview of research in the in the field of psychology of thinking and productive mental activity. Showed the basic differences between domestic and foreign schools of psychology in the approaches to the characterization of productive thinking. As specific features of productive thinking put forward a complex dialectical relationship of reproductive and productive processes. Marked the role of social, cultural and historical aspects in understanding the psychological nature of productive thinking.
