Abstract
Coffee, tea, alcohol, hemp and opiates, known at that time for many centuries, had been brought to America by immigrants from Europe and Asia. By the end of the nineteenth century, these substances were used in the United States legally with complete indifference by the public and that very little interference from the government. Morphine was manufactured legally in the USA both from imported and from domestic poppy, and became the most popular among American opiates due to its anesthetic effect. The use of morphine has increased significantly in the seventies of the XIXth century due to the invention of the hypodermic syringe, the rapid spread of patented drugs and widespread use of morphine in medical practice during the Civil war. Chemically derived from morphine, an opiate of heroin was the last word of the American pharmaceuticals.
